Using victoriana as its inspiration this simple square introduces us to the basics of filet crochet. Use this pretty sampler as a face cloth or as a doily for your dressing table.

Materials

RYC Siena, 100% mercerised cotton (140 m (153 yds) per 50 gm ball)
1 ball shade 652 (cream)

3mm crochet hook

Abbreviations

(US crochet terms are shown in brackets, in red)

sp - space
st - stitch
ch - chain
dc (sc) - double crochet (single crochet)
tr (dc) - treble (double crochet)

Pattern notes

Filet crochet uses treble (double crochet) and chain stitches which are formed into blocks and spaces. The pattern to be worked is represented by the chart.

Marthachart

The first line of the chart is read from right to left starting at the bottom right corner. Each blank square represents a space and each filled square represents a block of 4 trs (dcs).

The diagram below illustrates how to work the blocks and spaces.

Marthadiagram

Two continuous blocks are created by working 7 trs (dcs) and 3 continuous blocks are created by working 10 trs (dcs).

Follow the chart above to work the Martha Sampler.

Using 3 mm crochet hook work a foundation chain of 45 loops. Following the chart from the bottom right as stated, work your first tr (dc) in the 4th ch from your hook. Continue across the foundation chain to end. Continue until all 17 rows of chart have been completed but do not fasten off.

Edging

Commencing from the same point, work edging around the square as follows:
*1 tr (dc), 1 ch, rep from * to end. Fasten off.
Darn in all end on reverse of sampler.
Block lightly.
