Design Story

This shawl is perfect for those cool late summer/early autumn evenings when you need something to throw over your shoulders and cuddle up into. Knitted in the softest alpaca yarn this shawl is wonderfully light yet warm. Using two very simple lace patterns with thicker yarn and needles, this is an ideal shawl for the beginner lace knitter.

Materials

Mirasol Faerytale, 100% alpaca (175 m per 50 gm ball)
450gm heathered blue (hand painted shade 751)

9 mm (US #13) circular needle (80 cm/32 inches)

Abbreviations

RS - right side
WS - wrong side
K2tog - knit two together
2 yo - yarn over needle, twice
K2tog tbl - knit two together through back of loop
ptbl - purl through back of loop

Tension

12 sts in lace patt using double yarn, knitting with 2 strands at the same time = 10 cm/ 4 inches
(Standard tension is 18 sts = 10 cm (4 inches) using 4.5 mm (US #7) needles over st st.)

Pattern notes

Lace pattern 1

** Row 1 (RS): K2tog * 2 yo, k2tog tbl, k2tog*. Rep from * to * to last 2 sts, 2 yo, k2tog tbl.
Row 2 (WS): P, but ptbl second yo.** Rep these 2 rows.

Lace pattern 2

Work rows 1 and 2 as lace pattern 1
Row 3: Knit
Row 4: Purl
These 4 rows set pattern.

Lace pattern 3

Work rows 1 and 2 as lace pattern 1
Row 3: Knit
Row 4: Purl
Row 5: Knit
Row 6: Purl
These 6 rows set pattern.

Pattern

Using yarn doubled and 9 mm (US #13) circular needle, cast on 68 sts.

Starting with row 1, work in lace pattern 1 until work measures 10 cm (4 inches), ending with row 2. Then continue in lace pattern II until work measures 30 cm (12 inches) ending with row 4. Now work in lace pattern 3 until work measures 140 cm (55 inches) ending with row 6. Work in lace pattern 2 for 20 cm (8 inches) ending with row 4 and finally lace pattern 1 for 10 cm (4 inches), ending with row 2. Cast off.

Edging

Using 9 mm (US #13) circular needle, with RS facing and yarn doubled, pick up and knit 188 sts along cast on edge. Commencing with row 1 work in lace pattern 1 for 10 cm (4 inches). Cast off. Repeat along cast off edge.

Darn in all ends. Block lightly.
