Design Submissions
Our Ethos
Knitonthenet is committed to quality patterns being made available to everyone free of charge via the internet. Whilst we support the cost of running the magazine with a minimal amount of advertising, the magazine is not run for profit. As a magazine run by designers, we recognise the need for fair compensation and as such offer very favourable terms for successful submissions.
We look for individual, quality designs with an emphasis on womenswear and accessories. We like designs displaying tradition with a twist, using colour (both fairisle and intarsia), texture, lace. Projects with an interesting or unusual construction. Different techniques, projects incorporating felting, crochet, sewing and embroidery introducing readers to new skills.
We actively encourage new designers to contact us and are happy to support new designers through the pattern writing process.
Designs accepted for publication will receive payment depending on a number of factors such as complexity of design. Payment will be made via paypal whenever possible, and we will also provide a free advertising link from your pattern page to your chosen website.
We accept submissions for both knitting and crochet designs with a maximum of 2 or 3 crochet patterns in any one issue.
You, the designer, retain copyright of your pattern and are free to use it in any way you choose after the expiration of the issue in which it appears. You do however, agree to knitonthenet continuing to offer the pattern in the magazine‘s archives indefinately.
We cannot accept designs which have been shown elsewhere, even on your own blog or Ravelry. Once your design has gone 'live' you may promote it on your own blog or website and link it to the knitonthenet site. We can provide you with photos from the magazine for this purpose.
Yarn support can be provided and this can be discussed once your initial proposal has been accepted.
How to submit
Please note: it is not necessary at the initial submission stage to have a completed pattern or garment, however we will consider all submissions.
In the first instance send sketches, schematics if available, good scans/photos of swatches and clear description of design to submissions@knitonthenet.com
Also provide some background information about yourself and your design ethos. Please accompany this with images of previous designs if available.
We will contact you shortly after submission deadline whether you are successful or not. If successful, we will also send a pattern template for you to follow, and yarn support may also be available.
Knitonthenet likes to photograph all designs where practicable so you will need to send your project to us in good time. The address for sending completed projects to will be sent by email with your submission acceptance.
To help designers gauge what we are looking for in each issue we will release submission ideas at least one issue in advance. However do take a look through previous issues to get an idea of our style. We like a good mixture of easier and more complex projects, garments and other items. If you are new to pattern writing we can also help you with this.
