Indian Summer

Materials

1 x 115gm skein of Lornas laces shepherd worsted in Indian Summer.
100% superwash wool (Machine washable), 210m (225 yds)/115g hank
4.5mm crochet hook
2 small buttons

Made for head size approx 22 inches To adjust the size measure the head, and add or subtract the required number of inches from the side panels, and place buttonholes accordingly.

Tension

Not critical, this pattern makes a stretchy fabric, total length of headband is 19.5 inches without stretching. The standard tension for this yarn is 18sts to 4 inches/10cm on 4.5mm needles.

Abbreviations

US crochet terms are shown in brackets, in red.

ss - slip stitch
ch - chain
htr (hdc) - half treble (half double crochet)
dc (sc) - double crochet (single crochet)

Special note

After the foundation row, all dc (sc) must be worked into the back loop of the previous stitches, throughout. This forms the ridge pattern. The pattern is reversible it is up to you which side you choose to be the right side.

Pattern

Foundation row

With 4.5mm hook ch 7, miss a ch, work 1 dc (sc) into each ch to end.
Next row: Ch 1, wk 1 dc (sc) into the back of each dc (sc) to end. Repeat this row until work measures 4.5 inches (11.4cm).

Increase row: ch 1, wk 2 dc (sc) into next dc (sc), wk 1 dc (sc) into next 2 stitches, wk 2 dc (sc) into next to last stitch, 1 dc (sc) in last st.
Next row: ch 1, wk 1 dc (sc) into each st to end.

Repeat last 2 rows until there are 14 sts in the row.
Work straight until work measures 8 inches (20.3cm) from the start of the increases.

Decrease row: ch 1, miss 1 dc (sc) work 1 dc (sc) in each st until next to last st is reached. Miss this st and dc (sc) into last st, turn.
Next row: ch 1, wk 1 dc (sc) into each st to end.

Indian Summer Repeat last 2 rows until there are 6 dcs (scs) left. Continue straight for 2.5 inches (6.35cm).

Buttonhole row: ch 1, wk 1 dc (sc) into next 2 sts, ch 1 miss 1 dc (sc), wk 1 dc (sc) into each st to end.
Wk 3 more rows straight.
Make another buttonhole in the next row as before.
Wk straight until side piece measures 4.5 inches (11.4cm). Fasten off.

Making Up

Darn in ends. Sew on buttons.
