Tension

28sts x 38rows over 10cm using 3.25mm (US #4) needles over stocking stitch.

Abbreviations

C2B (cable 2 back): slip next st onto cable needle and leave at back of work, k1 then k1 from cable needle.

C2F (cable 2 front): slip next st onto a cable needle and leave at front of work, k1 then k1 from cable needle.

CR2L (cross 2 left): slip next st onto cable needle and leave at front of work, p1 then k1 from cable needle.

CR2R (cross 2 right): slip next st onto cable needle and leave at back of work, k1 then p1 from cable needle.

Back

(To make frilled edge)
Using 2.75mm (US #2) needles cast on 441(473, 505, 569)sts.
Next row: k1, *k2, lift first of these 2sts over 2 nd and off right needle, rep from * to end.
Next row: p1, *p2tog, rep from * to end. 110 (118,126,142)sts.
These 2 rows complete frilled edge.

Next row: purl
Next row (dec): Knit, dec 4sts evenly across row. 106 (114,122,138)sts.
Change to 3.25mm (US #4) needles.
Commence smock pattern thus:

Row 1(RS): P4, (C2F, P6) to last 6sts, C2F, P4
Row 2: K3, (CR2L, CR2R, K4) to last 7sts, CR2L,CR2R, K3
Row 3: P2, (CR2R, P2, CR2L, P2) to end.
Row 4: K1, (CR2L, K4, CR2R) to last st, K1.
Row 5: P1, K1, (P6, C2B) to last 8sts, P6, K1, P1.
Row 6: K1, (CR2R, K4, CR2L) to last st, K1.
Row 7: P2 (CR2L, P2, CR2R, P2) to end.
Row 8: K3, (CR2R, CR2L, K4) to last 7sts, CR2R, CR2L, K3

These 8 rows form smock pattern.
Commencing with row 1 repeat 8 rows of pattern until back measures 21(23,25,27.5)cm ending with a WS row.

Next row: (eyelet row): K2TOG, K1, YFWD, K2TOG, *P2, K1, YFWD, K2TOG, K1, rep from * to last 7 sts, P2, K2TOG, YFWD, K1, K2TOG. 104(112,120,136)sts.
Next row(WS): *P4, K2, rep from * to last 4 sts, P4.
Next row: * K4, P2, rep from * to last 4st, K4.
Rep last 2 rows a further 7 times, then first row once more.
Continuing in rib pattern as set:

Shape armholes

Keeping pattern correct, cast off 5(5,6,7)sts at beg of next 2 rows 94(102,108,122)sts.
Dec 1 st at each end of next 6 rows and foll 4 alt rows 74(82,88,102)sts.
Continue without shaping until armhole measures 14.5(15.5,16.5,17.5)cm, ending with a WS row.

Shape shoulders and back neck

Cast off 10(11,12,13)sts at beg of next 2 rows.
Next row: Pattern until 14(15,16,17)sts on RH needle, turn, and work on these sts only.
Next row: Cast off 4sts at beg of row.
Cast off rem 10(11,12,13)sts.
Rejoin yarn to rem sts., patt 26(30,32,42)sts, place these 26(30,32,42)sts on stitch holder, patt to end of row.
Working on these sts only work to match first shoulder, reversing all shapings.

Front

Work as for back until front measures 14(16) rows less than back to start of shoulder shaping.

Next row: Patt 26(30,32,34) place following 20(22,24,34)sts on holder, turn and patt to end.
On next and every foll alt row dec 1 st at neck edge of row until 20(22,24,26)sts rem.
Work 1 row.

Shape shoulder

Cast off 10(11,12,13)sts at beg of row.
Work 3 rows.
Cast off.

Rejoin yarn and work 2nd side to match.

Sleeves (Make two)

(To make frilled edge)
Using 2.75mm (US #2) needles, cast on 291sts.
Next row: K1, *K2, lift the first of these 2 sts over 2 nd and off RH needle, rep from * to end.
Next row: P1, *P2tog, rep from * to end. (72sts)

Next row(RS): Purl
Next row: Knit, inc 1 st at each end of row (74sts)
Change to 3.25 (US #4) needles and commence in smock pattern as set for back working complete pattern 3 times.
Commencing with a Knit row work in st st until sleeve measures 11(12,13,14)cm from start of smock pattern.

Shape Sleevehead

Cast off 5(5,6,7)sts at beg of next 2 rows.
Dec 1 st at each end of next and every foll 4 th row until 28sts.
Work 3(3,5,7) rows.
Cast off.

Making up

Darn in all ends. Block pieces. Before commencing with sewing up work embroidery as shown over smock stitch. We have used a combination of two colours of embroidery threads which are also in the ribbon used but the choice is yours.

Neckband

Join right shoulder seam. Using 2.75mm (US #2) circular needle and with RS facing
pick up 13(15,15,15) sts down left front, knit 20(22,24,34) sts from st holder pick up 13(15,15,15) sts up right front, 4 sts on right back, knit 24(28,30,40) sts from st holder, and pick up 4 sts up left back. 74(88,92,112) sts. Join and work in the round.
Next row: knit into the front and back of each stitch.
Knit two rows.
Cast off row: Knit into the front and back of each stitch, casting off as you go.

Join left shoulder seam. Join side seams. Sew up sleeve seams. Sew sleeves into body gathering up excess into puff sleeve as shown on photo.

Thread ribbon through eyelets.
