Crofters Hat

By Mairead Ramsay

Photo

Materials

Handspun yarn or similar. We have used Colinette Point 5 (100g/50m approx)
100% pure wool

2 x 100gm skeins (shade 119-Alizarine)

1 pair 6.5mm (US #10.5) needles

Pattern Notes

This hat is ideal for hand spun yarn. In fact I made this hat with the very first knobbly, slubby yarn I spun. Commercial big wool or very chunky is also good.

Crown (make four pieces)

Using 6.5mm(US #10.5) needles cast on 13sts.
Next row (RS): knit.
Next row: purl.
Rep these 2 rows 8 times more.
Dec 1st at each end of next and every alt row until 7sts remain.
Decrease 1st at each end of every row until 3sts remain.
Next row: p3 tog.
Cast off.

Make 3 more pieces the same.

Brim

Sew the 4 pieces of the crown together leaving one seam open.
With RS facing, pick up and knit 50sts around the cast on edge of the hat.
Next row: k1, *m1, k2, repeat from * to last st, m1, k1. (74sts.)
Work 6 rows in garter stitch (every row knit).
Cast off very loosely.

Making Up

Sew up remaining seam. Darn in all ends.
