20 sts x 30 rows over 10cm using 4mm needles.

Abbreviations

(k1b, k1) K into the back of next st, then into the front of the same st., then insert left hand needle point between the vertical strand between these 2sts just made and k into this strand, making a 3 rd st.
(p1, yo, p1) work into the same st, making 3sts out of 1.
(T3b) slip next st onto cable needle and hold at back of work, k2, then p1 from cable needle.
(T3f) slip first 2sts to cable needle and hold at front of work, p1, then k2 from cable needle.
(TW4bp) slip first 2sts to cable needle and hold at back of work; k2; k1, p1 from cable needle.
(TW4fp) slip first 2sts to cable needle and hold at front of work; p1, k1, k2 from cable needle.

Back

Using 3.25mm (US #4) needles and yarn A cast on 76 (80, 88, 92, 96)sts.
Row 1: (k2, p2) repeat to end.
Row 2: as row 1
Row 3: Using yarn B, (k2, p2) repeat to end.
Row 4: as row 3.
Repeat these 4 rows once more.
Row 9: Using yarn M, (k2, p2) repeat to end.

Finish rib with WS facing. AT THIS POINT PLEASE READ PATTERN AS FAR AS ARMHOLE SHAPING BEFORE COMMENCING.

Change to 4mm (US #6) needles and commencing with a knit row, work 7 rows in reverse stocking stitch.
AT THE SAME TIME INCREASE 1 STITCH AT EACH END OF EVERY 9 TH ROW UNTIL 88 (92, 100, 104 ,108) STS.

Next row (RS): p13 (14, 15, 15, 17) work next 13sts from row 1 of pattern 1, p 24(26, 32, 36, 36) work next 13sts from row 1 of pattern 1, p13(14, 15, 15, 17).
Next row: k 14(15, 16, 16, 18) (including inc st), work next 13sts from row 2 of pattern 1, k24 (26, 32, 36, 36), work next 13sts from row 2 of pattern 1, k14 (15,16, 16, 18) (including inc st).

These 2 rows set pattern. Continue, working increases into purl and knit sts at edges of rows, repeating 30 rows of pattern until work measures 26cm.

Shape armhole

Keeping pattern correct, cast off 6sts at beg of next 2 rows (76, 80, 88, 92, 96sts).
Dec 1 st at each end of next 4 rows then every other row 3 times.
Dec 1 st at each end of every 4 th row 3 times (56, 60, 68, 72, 76sts).
Work 38 rows without shaping. (Once 4 complete pattern repeats have been completed from beg of work, continue in reverse stocking stitch only from this point).

Shape shoulders and back neck

First and second sizes only

Cast off 7sts, patt next 11sts, turn, leaving rem sts on holder. Work on these 11sts only.
Next row: Cast off 4sts., pattern to end.
Next row: Cast off rem 7sts.

Third, fourth and fifth sizes only

Cast off 7sts at beg of next 2 rows.
Next row: Cast off 7sts., patt next 8 (10, 12)sts, turn, leaving rem sts. on holder. Work on these 12sts only.
Next row: Cast off 4sts., pattern to end.
Next row: Cast off rem 4 (6, 8)sts.

All sizes

Rejoin yarn. Cast off centre 20 (24, 24, 24, 24)sts, patt to end.
Work to match first shoulder, reversing shapings.

Left Front

Using 3.25mm (US #4) needles and yarn A, cast on 34 (36, 40, 42, 44)sts. Work rib as for back, ending with WS facing.
PLEASE READ PATTERN AS FAR AS ARMHOLE SHAPING BEFORE COMMENCING.

Change to 4mm (US #6) needles and commencing with a k row, work 7 rows in reverse stocking stitch.
AT SAME TIME INCREASE 1 ST AT SIDE EDGE ON EVERY 9 TH ROW UNTIL 40 (42, 46, 48, 50) STS.
Next row (RS): p13 (14, 15, 15, 17), work next 13sts from row 1 of pattern 1, p8 (9, 12, 14, 14).
Next row: k8 (9, 12, 14, 14), work next 13sts from row 2 of pattern 1, k13 (14, 15, 15, 17).

** These 2 rows set pattern, continue as set, repeating 30 rows of pattern 1 until front is 3 rows shorter than back to armhole shaping.

Shape neck

Cast off 1 st at neck edge, patt to end.
Dec 1 st at neck edge every 6 th row 10 times, maintaining pattern.
AT SAME TIME when work measures the same as back to armhole commence shaping thus:

Armhole shaping

Next row: Cast off 6sts at beg of row. Dec 1 st at side edge of next 4 rows then every other row 4 times. Dec 1 st at side edge of every 4 th row 3 times.
Continue without further shaping at side edge until work measures same as back to shoulder.

Shape shoulder

First and second sizes only

Next row: Cast off 7sts, patt to end.
Work 1 row.
Cast off rem 7sts.

Third, fourth and fifth sizes only

Next row: Cast off 7sts, patt to end.
Work 1 row.
Cast off 7sts at beg of next row, patt to end.
Work 1 row.
Cast off rem 4 (6, 8)sts.

Right front

Work as for left front until end of ribbing.
Next row (RS): p8 (9, 12, 14, 14), work 13sts from row 1 of pattern 1, p13 (14, 15, 15, 17).
Next row: k 13 (14, 15, 15, 17), work 13sts from row 2 of pattern 1, p8 (9, 12, 14, 14).

Work as for left front from ** reversing all shapings.

Sleeves (Make two)

Using 3.25mm needles and yarn A, cast on 60sts.
Work 9 rows of rib as for back.
Change to 4mm needles.
Next row (WS): k30, M1, k30. (61sts).

Row 1: p24, work next 13sts from row 1 of pattern 1, p24.
Row 2: k24, work next 13sts from row 2 of pattern 1, k24.

These 2 rows set patt. continue repeating 30 rows of pattern 1 throughout sleeve AT SAME TIME increase 1 st at each end of every 3 rd row 6 times (73sts).
Work without shaping until sleeve measures 12cm, ending with a WS row.

Armhole shaping

PLEASE NOTE ON COMPLETION OF SECOND REPEAT OF HEART PATTERN CONTINUE IN REVERSE STOCKING STITCH ONLY

Cast off 6sts at beg of next 2 rows (61sts)
Dec 1 st at each end of next 4 rows then every other row 3 times.
Dec 1 st each end of every 4 th row 4 times, then on every 3 rd row 3 times, then on every row 6 times.
(20sts remaining).
Cast off 4sts at beg of next 2 rows.
Work 1 row.
Cast off rem 12sts.

Making Up

Darn in all ends. Block pieces.
Sew shoulder seams.

Left buttonband

Using 3.25mm (US #4) needles and yarn B, pick up and knit 56 stitches along centre edge of left front to beginning of neck shaping. Work rib as for back. Cast off in rib.

Mark button positions.

Right buttonband

Using 3.25mm (US #4) needles and yarn B, pick up and knit 56 stitches along centre edge of right front to beginning of neck shaping. Work rib as for back, at same time on row 4, work 4 buttonholes.
Cast off in rib.

Shawl Collar

Using 3.25mm (US #4) needles and yarn B, pick up and knit 162 stitches, with RS facing, from right buttonband, across right front, across back, across left front, and from left buttonband.

Next row (WS): MAINTAINING STRIPE PATTERN, p2 *(k2, p2), rep from * to end.
Next row: *(k2, p2) rep to last 2 sts, k2.
Continuing in stripe pattern, rep these 2 rows a further 3 times.

Next and following rows: Patt to last 4sts, wrap next st, turn.

Continue as above, working short rows of 4 less stitches on each row until 88 sts rem. Please note you will have to break off and rejoin yarn with each colour change.

Break off yarn and rejoin at beginning of row. Patt across all 162 sts knitting wraps in with stitches.
Work 1 row.
Cast off in rib.

Sew side seams. Sew sleeve seams. Insert sleeves and sew in place. Darn in all remaining ends.
Sew buttons in place.
